Explaining AKC Hunting Dog Certifications

Wondering what the "JH" means in Nala's official name? Understanding the different AKC Hunt Test levels is key to appreciating the training and dedication behind a well-rounded retriever. Each certification marks a new milestone in your dog’s development, from mastering the basics of retrieving to demonstrating advanced control and hunting skills. Below is an overview of what each level entails and what it takes for a retriever to earn these prestigious titles.

JH

JUNIOR HUNTER

At the Junior Hunter level, the dog needs to demonstrate basic obedience and retrieve two marks—one on land and one in water—while on leash, with minimal control required. The Junior Hunter title is awarded after four passes.

SH

SENIOR HUNTER

For the Senior Hunter test, dogs must show off-leash control, steadiness, and versatility with marks, blinds, honoring another dog, and a walk-up. The Senior Hunter title is awarded after four passes, plus an additional one if the Junior title isn't held.

MH

MASTER HUNTER

The Master Hunter level is the most demanding, spanning a full weekend and including three series: land, water, and a combined land/water series. Dogs must display exceptional control, marking, blinds, and teamwork; passing five tests (or more if previous titles are missing) earns the Master Hunter title.

ADDITIONAL AWARDS

The elite Master National competition, a multi-day, grueling event where only top Master Hunters compete. Successfully passing three such events grants a dog entry into the Retriever Hall of Fame and the prestigious Master National title.
